Rule Five Trump Successor Friday

So who, in the 2028 presidential election, will be running to succeed Donald Trump? There’s one obvious name, of course, and President Trump isn’t shy about mentioning that name:

At a press conference on Monday, FOX News White House correspondent Peter Doocy asked President Donald Trump whether he would clear the 2028 Republican field and name an heir. Trump responded that Vice President J.D. Vance is “most likely” the heir apparent to the MAGA movement, citing the office he holds. He added that he would like to see Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio “get together” in some form.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Peter.

PETER DOOCY, FOX NEWS WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Thank you very much, President Trump. Nice to see you got off the roof, all right.

TRUMP: Yeah, yeah.

DOOCY: You said this morning that you probably won’t be running for a third term. This weekend, Secretary of State Rubio said that he thought J.D. Vance would be a great nominee. You could clear the entire Republican field right now. Do you agree that the heir apparent to MAGA is J.D. Vance?

TRUMP: Well, I think most likely, in all fairness, he’s the Vice President. I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with J.D. in some form. I also think we have incredible people, some of the people on the stage right here. So it’s too early, obviously, to talk about it. But certainly he’s doing a great job and he would be probably favored at this point.

Yes, Vice President JD Vance would seem to be the obvious name to mention. It’s really early on, yet; we aren’t even through to the 2026 midterms, so it’s a little soon to be talking about 2028, although I think JD Vance would certainly be a good candidate.

But the GOP has lots of good possibilities. I would be rather amazed if Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis doesn’t eventually make another run. President Trump mentions Marco Rubio, who is framing very well as Secretary of State – in fact his new foreign policy chops would make him a very interesting running mate for a JD Vance presidential run.

The point is this: The GOP seems to have a wealth of great candidates. Who do the Democrats have? Kamala “Cackles” Harris, who is still stinging from her shellacking in the 2024 election? “Pothole Pete” Buttigieg, who failed at being mayor of South Bend, Indiana before failing as Secretary of Transportation? Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who couldn’t scrounge up 20 IQ points to rub together?

If the Democrats were smart, they’d turn to someone like Joe Manchin, Josh Shapiro or even Senator John Fetterman to save them. But they won’t; they’re stuck in the doom loop of “when progressive policies fail, progressive harder.“

And that’s fine. The old military axiom applies: When your enemy is in the process of committing suicide, let him.
