Enjoyable as the holidays are, for an old Type AAA workaholic like me, there is always a certain satisfaction in setting nose to grindstone again in January.
And, it seems President Obama is back to work infringing our Constitutional rights, as well. Excerpt:
Within an hour or so of posting this (article) originally with that last sentence, I learned the Obama administration slipped out the news on New Year’s Eve that, as CNN is reporting:
President Barack Obama is expected to announce in the coming days a new executive action with the goal of expanding background checks on gun sales, people familiar with White House planning said.
Described as “imminent,” the set of executive actions would fulfill a promise by the President to take further unilateral steps the White House says could help curb gun deaths.
Remember, more background checks would have done nothing to stop any of the public atrocities that allegedly inspired the move. Indeed, I’d be interested if the White House could deliver verifiable numerical facts about how many gun murders in the past few years could reliably have been prevented by such background check law expansion, even if they assumed the insane: that indeed no one ever would sell a gun citizen-to-citizen without a background check if there were a law against it.
One might wonder – why has Congress “not acted” on the President’s desired slate of gun control actions? Probably because the American people, by and large, don’t want any action on guns. In this respect, unlike many others, Congress is at least doing right by their constituents – and President Obama apparently can’t understand why us dumb rednecks out here in flyover country want it that way.
It will be interesting to see how any of these proposed rules affect yr. obdt. specifically, being a licensed collector in possession of a Curio & Relics license. That license allows me to buy and sell firearms more than 50 years old directly, bypassing the background check/transfer process. I have purchased such guns on my C&R but have never sold one. I suspect that the Obama Administration would look upon me and my gun rack with suspicion, as (for example) my small collection of 1940s-vintage Winchester Model 12s or my 70-year old Browning Auto-5 may present some sort of threat to the populace.
Of course, you can look to the immediate right (image courtesy of our good friend Bernie over at Planck’s Constant) and see how much the Obama Adminstration’s opinion on such things matters to me.
