Goodbye, Blue Monday

Goodbye, Blue Monday!

Thanks once again to The Other McCain, Pirate’s Cove, Bacon Time, The Daley Gator, Whores and Ale, and Flappr for the Rule Five links! As before, if I’ve missed your FMJRA, let me know in the comments and I’ll get you added to the mentions.

Now then; whatever you think of Donald Trump, this is a staggeringly bad idea.

For one thing: What is “our religion?” The United States, while being largely Judeo-Christian culturally, is a secular nation. The only mention of religion in the Constitution is in the First Amendment, prohibiting the Imperial government from interfering with the people’s free exercise of religion.  And what religions is the former President talking about disallowing?  Islam, one would presume. But what about some other, non-Abrahamic faiths? Shinto, for example, is an animistic religion widely practiced in Japan; would Shinto adherents not be allowed in?  How about atheists?  Were I applying for immigration (strictly hypothetical as I was born a citizen) would I be disallowed?

I think the once and (likely) future President is pandering here, and talking out of his ass to boot. The Constitution sets up a secular government. It prohibits any religious test for any elected, appointed, or hired office. What Mr. Trump is proposing can’t and shouldn’t happen.  It’s disappointing that he even brought it up.

I can’t speak for all of you, but this is the kind of thing I remember when the primaries roll around.
