Goodbye, Blue Monday

Goodbye, Blue Monday!

Thanks as always to The Other McCain, Whores and Ale, Pirate’s Cove and Bacon Time for the Rule Five links!

Now then:  The Chinese are talking tough towards Japan, particularly where Taiwan is involved.  Specifically, they are threatening to nuke Japan if the Japanese interfere with any hypothetical ChiCom invasion of Taiwan.  This article is from the blog of one Jennifer Zeng, who seems to have a pretty good grasp on the topic.  Excerpt:

Wang Hongguang,  former deputy commander of the CCP’s army,  PLA’s  Nanjing Military Region once published his article at this channel’s account. So we can say this channel either belongs to the PLA, or has strong ties with the PLA.

It is a relatively new channel at a Chinese video sharing site called Xigua Video(西瓜視頻).  Xigua  means Watermelon. It has about 2 million subscribers.   Its first video was published on Nov 22 last year. That video has already got more than 20 million views.

Now, let’s watch the first video, in which the host vows to nuke Japan until it surrenders. Please make sure you read the English titles added by me:

When we liberate Taiwan, if Japan dares to intervene by force, even if it only deploys one soldier, one plane and one ship, we will not only return reciprocal fire, but also start a full-scale war against Japan. We will use nuclear bombs first. We will use nuclear bombs continuously until Japan declares unconditional surrender for the second time.

What we want to target is Japan’s ability to endure a war. As long as Japan realizes that it cannot afford to pay the price of war, it will not dare to rashly send troops to the Taiwan Strait.

Well, this is some serious WW3-level shit right here.

I have a few issues with the tough talk by the CCP here:

  1. The CCP has a reputation for their mouths writing checks their asses can’t cash.  As far as I have been able to find, they don’t have the naval or sealift capacity to invade Taiwan – yet.  Taiwan has a fair amount of military capacity themselves, never mind Japan.
  2. Japan has a fair amount of military capacity, and there’s always the chance they may suddenly remember their own considerable military history.
  3. I doubt Putin would particularly want to get involved in this shit.  We’re not talking about the glory days of the Red Army at the gates of Berlin, having shot and raped their way into Germany, after all.  At present Russia has an economy about the size of Spain’s, and a lot of aging hardware.  They’re basically a gas station with some nuclear weapons.  And the Norks?  Well, they have some nukes, but zero – zero – sealift capacity.

But here’s where I am a bit concerned.  It’s likely that this sort of shit-talking by China is the result of our current lack of effective leadership in the Imperial City.  The Chinese probably suspect – rightly – that President Biden(‘s handlers) response to any Chinese actions against Taiwan would be damned ineffective, if indeed there is any response at all.  And, let’s say things get completely out of hand and the CCP nukes Tokyo, or Osaka, or Kyoto.  What is President Biden(‘s handlers) likely response?

I’m guessing, “not much.”  It wouldn’t be the first time the U.S. has left supposed allies twisting in the breeze, but it would be one of the most egregious cases of such.
