As do many of you True Believers out there probably do, I’m in the habit of surfing Gunbroker and other online gun auction sites from time to time, looking to round out my collection with a few specifics, like a nice 20-gauge Model 12. To that end, I’m generally browsing through the Curio & Relics portion, which is appropriate, since I’m something of a curio myself, not to mention a relic.
But one thing jumps out at me these days, and it’s the prices on some old Communist-Chinese junk. Example: A plain-Jane ChiCom SKS rifle, a piece so poorly made that if you wanted to injure someone with it, your odds of success would be improved if you just took it by the barrel and used it as a club. Those old pigs are selling for between $750 and $1,000.
Seriously?
Back in the mid-Nineties they were being advertised in the old Shotgun News for $49.99. Like a lot of folks, I bought one, and was sorely disappointed in the piece of junk. I got rid of it pretty quickly. And now people are apparently paying close to a grand for them?
I guess I should have bought a couple of cases of them. Who knew?

This Week’s Cultural Edification:
Anyone who has read these virtual pages for long knows of my fondness for Japan. While I don’t have the nocturnal endurance I did when I was younger, I have on occasion taken part in the night life of places like Kyoto, Osaka and various other towns, but as far as partying goes, it’s hard to beat Tokyo. That city has lots of great places where you can down a few drinks and, on the right night, catch some good live music. I’ve spent some memorable nights in Japanese bars and nightclubs. There are some neat places in Shibuya and Akihabara, the Golden Gai in Shinjuku is a real gas but not a place you’ll see a lot of fellow gaijin, and there are fun spots even in the lesser-known areas like Kinshicho, where we usually stay when we’re in Tokyo.
