Now, then moving right along: RealClearScience’s Ross Pomeroy, who is always worth reading, has some ideas one how to fight the next pandemic. Unfortunately some of his ideas are terribly impractical. Excerpts, with my comments:
1. Ban the sale of wild animals and freshly-slaughtered animals at wet markets in China and around the world. The likeliest source for the coronavirus is the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, China. A wet market also likely spawned the SARS outbreak in 2003. At this market and others like it, humans and wild animals gather in cacophonous, crowded spaces, exchanging goods, money, and germs.
Good idea. However, I have a fully feeling that the idea won’t fly in Wuhan. The Chinese Communist Party doesn’t seem to be too concerned about this; they have, supposedly, passed a pro forma order to these places to shut down, but I have a feeling the issue rates about a 1.1 out of 10 on the typical Chinese food vendor’s Give-A-Shit-O-Meter.
2. Crack down on alternative medicine. Wikipedia defines alternative medicine as “any practice that aims to achieve the healing effects of medicine, but which lacks biological plausibility and is untested, untestable or proven ineffective.” Homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic, and traditional Chinese medicine are a few subsets. So if these disciplines are implausible, untestable, or even outright ineffective, what’s the point?
Indeed, what’s the point? These “alternative medicines” are horseshit. Unfortunately, plenty of people believe in horseshit. (Gwyneth, are you listening?) Not just in China, but in Europe and the United States as well. Banning the practices will just result in a booming black market – see “rhino horn.” Education would help, but see the comment on Give-A-Shit-O-Meters, above.
5. End the censorship of science and heed scientific and public health experts. In the early days of the coronavirus outbreak, all the way back in December 2019, Chinese officials actively attempted to censor and suppress news of the virus’ spread rather than respond to it.
Sure. Good idea. Now sell it to the Chinese.
Listen, all of the ideas in the linked article are good ones. They just aren’t realistic. As the late Paul Harvey was wont to say, ‘it isn’t one world,’ and most of the world is dark, uneducated, ignorant, superstitious and sometimes just plain stupid.
That’s the hand we’re dealt. And so, yes, there will be another pandemic like this one, likely from a similar source. Best to concentrate how we here in the U.S. are to deal with it, and if you ask me, each citizen, each family had better damn well take responsibility for that unto themselves, because the government hasn’t inspired a lot of confidence in crisis management. When all of this blows over and things return to normal for a while, my advice, True Believers, is to lay in a supply of antiseptics and face masks.
