Moving right along: Look up “irony” in the dictionary, and you’ll find this story: Saudi Arabia hosts UN-backed human rights summit ‘on combating religious discrimination.’ Uh huh. Excerpt:
Saudi Arabia has hosted an international conference on human rights, attended by the president of the UN Human Rights Council, and resolved to combat intolerance and violence based on religious belief.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) – which has its headquarters in Jeddah – convened the fifth annual meeting of the Istanbul Process as the kingdom’s Supreme Court prepared to rule on the case of blogger Raif Badawi, sentenced to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes for “insulting Islam through religious channels”. It later upheld the sentence.
The UN HRC recently faced criticism over Saudi plans to head up the council from 2016, in what critics said would be the “final nail in the coffin” for the international body.
Why not just stick a fork in the UN itself? The UN was based on the post-World War II balance of power, which has long since faded away. The United Nations is now a sounding board for every barbaric collection of gasbags (like the Saudis) and every thug/dictator in the world.
And the proof is that fact that the UN thinks it appropriate to let the Saudis head up the UN Human Rights Council. What the fuck? This is a country that has no freedom of religion – none. Apostasy is punishable by death. No expression of faith or houses of worship other than Islamic ones are allowed – by law. Distribution of any religious text other than the Koran is prohibited by law. Atheism is a capital crime. And how about the Saudi’s treatment of women? Women in the Kingdom are prohibited from leaving their homes unless accompanied by a male relative. Women are not allowed to drive. And all these laws are enforced – harshly – by the Mutaween, the religious police of the Kingdom.
And the UN thinks these assholes should run the Human Rights Council?
What an unmitigated disaster the UN has become.
