Silver Salmon

Me, with a 12-pound silver salmon

Susitna River

A view of the Susitna River from an overlook on AK Highway 3. This is the kind of riverbottom habitat that Alaska's brown and grizzly bears favor.

Growth on a tree

I'm not sure what this is. Alaska's climate is much cooler and wetter than Colorado, making the state very green. This is evidently some kid of parasitic growth on the trunk of a spruce tree.

Undergrowth

This kind of thick undergrowth can make hiking in Alaska interesting - since it can, at times, conceal a bear or moose.

Alaska Caribou habitat

We didn't see any caribou in this stretch, but it's ideal habitat - open country, dotted with conifers, a river in the background. This is on Highway 3 north of Talkeetna.

Lunch!

A great place to get lunch if you're headed someplace on Highway 3, which runs from Anchorage to Fairbanks.

View

Just another great view of the Alaska countryside along Highway 3.

View

Again, a view from Highway 3.

View

Another from Highway 3, just because I really love this part of Alaska.

Trees

I thought this made a nice shot, looking upward at the sky from a trail near Denali.

Forbs and Fungus

I don't know what these are, but the moist, cool climate is great for various undergrowth and fungus.

Trailside

A walking trail in Denali National Park.

Sustina River

Farther north on the Sustina, as you get towards the entrance to Denali National Park. The river here is cloudy with glacial silt.

Denali

A nice view of Denali from the northern Highway 3 overlook.

Fireweed

Alaskan fireweed - these plants grow everywhere.

Portage Lake

This is ice from the Portage glacier, on the 2nd of September after a warm summer. The water here is ice-cold.

Sunset on the Kenai

A colorful sunset over the Kenai River

Skilak Lake

A nice view of Skilak Lake, near Sterling. This is a nice place to go in the evening to hear loons calling.

Canyon Creek

A view from an overlook along the Homer Highway

Soldotna

My favorite town in southern Alaska. I hope to retire to Soldotna; current population is about 7,000. My kind of place.

Woods in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge

The rain forest in the KNWR remind me of the woods at Ft. Lewis, Washington, where I was stationed briefly.

Moose!

Near Soldotna. Moose are everywhere on the Kenai Peninsula.

Kenai Lake

The Kenai Lake, near Cooper Landing
